As the General Contractor for Waste Management Arizona Landfills, Rummel Construction, Inc. was contracted to excavate 1.2 million cubic yards in six weeks to create a new cell. The landfill is located on West Deer Valley Road in Surprise. The excavation required strict materials management as we were required to screen excavated earth to provide 50,000 cubic yards of suitable material that will eventually go over the top of the liner. The remaining excavation quantity was hauled with scrapers to separate stockpile locations ranging from just under a mile, to a mile and a half away. We were also able to assist Waste Management in assessing and repairing their storm water drainage. We were under a tight deadline as the ever expanding landfill was scheduled to run out of airspace at the end of January 2008. This became a logistical problem as our primary focus is on safety. A public landfill that has hundreds of customers a day who are unfamiliar with earth moving equipment is not exactly the safest environment for an escalated schedule. The solution was performing our operations that interfered with Waste Management's customers at night. This allowed us to exceed the tight deadlines by over a week and achieve the safest working environment possible. Rummel Construction, Inc. provided a variety of services to meet or exceed the expectations of the owner. We were able to use our long standing relationship with a nearby developer, to secure an offsite construction water source that prevented the project from being delayed. Rummel was also able to reduce costs to the owner by self performing all the work.
